Matching

Find out how to create a Matching interaction

Updated over a week ago

About this feature

The Matching is a fun and intuitive exercise which can be used to stimulate students of all ages.

Please note that, for the time being:

  • It's not possible to match two images (see section Student view below);

  • Mathematical formulas are only supported on one side of the Matching interaction (see section Student view below);

How it works: Teacher view

Step 1: Select the Matching question-type

Step 2: Fill in a question and the items to match

To create a Matching, you need to fill in a question (e.g. "Link the capitals with their countries") and provide items which the students will have to match (e.g. "Belgium" and "Brussels", "Uganda" and "Kampala", etc.).

On each row, fill in one item from one column (e.g. "Belgium") and the corresponding item from the second column (e.g. "Brussels", which is the capital of Belgium). The matches you fill in here are the correct answers to the question.

If you'd like, you can also add images to the first column, either to provide an additional clue or to ask students to match a description to an image (Example: "Match the name of a country to that country's flag"). An image can be accompanied by text, but it doesn't have to be.

To add an image, click on the button to the left of the question or item and select an image from your computer.

Lastly, please note that you can also match several elements to the same destination.

Step 3: Start the question

When you start a matching question, it is possible that the items of both columns will be displayed in the correct order on your screen, because that order is determined randomly.

We have not yet added a button to "randomise" the order of the items, but you can do so by duplicating the question (using the three dots next to the question on your event's interface).

By duplicating the question, a new random order will be determined. Please note that this new order may, again, be the correct one. In that case, duplicate the question again.

For matching questions, the students' incoming answers are hidden by default. The reason for that is that students who participate by SMS text need to see the different items displayed on your presentation's screen to know which combinations to send (e.g. "1C" to match "Belgium" with "Brussels", etc.). They do not receive that information on their phone.

Once you're ready to display the results, click on the button on the left side of the screen to reveal the most frequent answers. You can then see how many students matched certain items.

How it works: Student view

Once you start the question, the students will see the items from the first column displayed below each other. For each item, they will have to select the corresponding item from the second column in a drop-down list.

Please note that due to the drop-down lists:

  • you can't match two images (you can only add images to the first column, not the second one);

  • the second column doesn't support LaTeX and AsciiMath formulas. Since we have no control over the design and display of these drop-down lists, mathematical formulas won't be displayed properly in this column.
